The Nigeria Union of Journalists, Sokoto Council, has commended the Sokoto State Government for its proactive initiative to establish Sauki Shops. The initiative, aimed at subsidizing food prices, is a significant step towards easing the economic burden on residents.
It was contained in a communiqué issued at the end of its maiden Congress and signed by the Chairman, Usman Mohammed Binji and Secretary Muhammad Nasir Bello.
The Congress also applauded other measures to improve citizens’ lives, particularly the implementation of the 70,000 Naira minimum wage for state civil servants, local government employees, and Local Government Education Authority staff, including primary school teachers.
It expressed its heartfelt gratitude to the Sokoto State Government for its support to the union.
On security, the Congress commended the Nigerian Army and other security agencies for their unwavering efforts to rid the state and the Northwest of banditry and criminal activities
However, it stressed the need for sustained operations to apprehend notorious bandits and bring them to justice
The Congress reaffirmed its unwavering commitment to upholding the highest standards of journalism. It called on journalists to promote ethical practices and protect their rights, thereby ensuring the integrity of the profession.
It emphasized the importance of fostering unity and good governance in Sokoto State, calling on journalists to play a pivotal role in shaping public opinion and holding those in power accountable.
The Congress made a firm resolution to organize regular workshops and training programmes. The programmes, focusing on digital literacy, judicial reporting, and other relevant areas, will play a crucial role in enhancing journalists’ skills and knowledge.
It urged media houses to revive mentorship programs, pairing experienced journalists with younger colleagues to provide guidance and support for career growth, demonstrating the union’s commitment to nurturing the next generation of journalists.
The Congress extended its appreciation to the newly inaugurated executives, who assumed office on December 21, 2024, for their commitment to promoting journalists’ interests in the state and fostering a collaborative relationship with stakeholders.
