A Northern Christian political group has urged the All Progressives Congress (APC) to appoint a Northern Christian as Director-General of President Bola Tinubu’s 2027 presidential campaign, arguing that the move would strengthen the ruling party’s re-election bid and reinforce national unity.
The call was made by the Secretary of the Northern Christian Progressive Group, Rev. Hayap Musa Danladi, in a statement issued to journalists on Thursday.
Danladi said the approach of the 2027 general election presents an opportunity for Northern Christians to demonstrate their political relevance and commitment to the success of the Tinubu administration.
He recalled that during the 2023 presidential election, the APC appointed former Plateau State Governor, Solomon Lalong, to coordinate Tinubu’s campaign, describing the decision as instrumental to the party’s electoral success.
According to him, appointing another prominent Northern Christian to lead the 2027 campaign would further consolidate support for the President while addressing criticisms and misconceptions about alleged religious bias against the administration.
“We appeal to President Bola Tinubu to once again consider a Christian politician from Northern Nigeria for the position of Director-General of his presidential campaign,” Danladi said.
He added that such an appointment would promote inclusiveness, strengthen mutual trust among Nigerians and underscore the administration’s commitment to religious harmony.
Danladi maintained that Northern Christian politicians are prepared to mobilise support for Tinubu’s re-election, citing what he described as the President’s achievements in governance and ongoing reforms.
He also urged Nigerians to reject religious and ethnic divisions, stressing the need to prioritise national development and peaceful coexistence.
“We must shun religious hatred and ethnic differences and work together to overcome the nation’s challenges. Christians are committed to nation-building and see all Nigerians as equal partners in progress,” he said.
Also speaking, the leader of the Northern Christians Youth, Zakaria Bitrus Gwasshi, commended Tinubu’s administration for what he described as its commitment to fairness, national unity and security.
Gwasshi said the administration’s efforts to tackle insecurity, stimulate economic growth and promote peaceful coexistence were yielding positive results, particularly in states such as Bauchi, Kaduna, Plateau and Benue, which have experienced religious tensions in the past.
He expressed confidence that the President’s policies would continue to foster unity and stability across the country.
