The quest to preserve indigenous heritage, promote cultural identity, and showcase the richness of Yorùbá civilisation to the world has received a significant boost, following the Oyo State Government’s commitment to support the third edition of the Annual World Headdress Celebration, scheduled for Monday, December 28, 2026, in Ibadan.
The Commissioner for Culture and Tourism, Dr Wasiu Olatunbosun, gave the assurance when members of the Ọmọ Yorùbá Àtàtà Socio-cultural Initiative (ỌYÀSI), the celebration’s organisers, paid him a courtesy visit as part of preparations for the forthcoming event.
Olatunbosun described the celebration as a laudable initiative and pledged his total support towards ensuring its success. He also promised to incorporate the December 28 event into the activities lined up for Vibing December, the Oyo State Government’s festive-season project introduced in 2025.
The Chairman of ỌYÀSI, Mr Olawale Ajao, expressed appreciation to the commissioner for his consistent support for the World Headdress Celebration since its inception in 2024.
As preparations gather momentum for the December 28 celebration, the organisers’ vision extends beyond staging another annual event.
It is an opportunity to demonstrate how a cultural idea, driven by commitment and collaboration, can become a platform for preserving heritage, inspiring creativity and connecting communities.
The inclusion of the celebration in the state’s Vibing December activities could also help expose the initiative to a broader audience during the festive season, strengthening Ibadan’s profile as a destination for cultural experiences and heritage-based tourism.
For ỌYÀSI, the challenge and opportunity lie in building on this growing recognition to make the World Headdress Celebration a sustainable cultural institution with national relevance and international appeal.
The third edition of the Annual World Headdress Celebration represents more than a date on the cultural calendar; it is a renewed call to value indigenous knowledge, celebrate diversity and ensure that the traditions inherited from previous generations remain visible, meaningful and appreciated by generations to come.

With the organisers’ determination and the Oyo State Government’s expressed support, the December 28 celebration offers a promising platform for showcasing the beauty of cultural heritage and demonstrating that traditions, when thoughtfully preserved and creatively presented, can inspire pride, foster unity and open new possibilities for cultural tourism and development.
Within Yorùbá society, traditional headwear forms part of a rich cultural vocabulary through which people express dignity, beauty, identity and social values. These traditions remain relevant in contemporary society, even as designers and cultural practitioners explore new ways of interpreting and presenting indigenous styles.
By bringing together diverse cultural expressions, the World Headdress Celebration seeks to create a platform for cultural exchange, education, creativity and the documentation of traditions that might otherwise receive insufficient attention.
The event also presents an opportunity to engage young people in the appreciation of their cultural heritage while encouraging designers, artisans, researchers, cultural enthusiasts and other stakeholders to recognise the social and creative value of traditional headwear.
With the Oyo State Government expressing its willingness to support the forthcoming edition, the organisers have an opportunity to build on the foundation laid since the celebration began in 2024 and strengthen its prospects for wider recognition.
