In Nigeria’s bustling cities, a palpable energy ignites as environmental enthusiasts converge, united by a singular vision: a waste-free future.
The Annual Clean-up Campaign, spearheaded by Nestlé Nigeria, serves as a vibrant backdrop where volunteers, partners, and community members join hands to combat the nation’s pressing waste crisis. Their shared determination transforms the landscape, both physically and mentally, as they work towards better surroundings and robust waste recovery systems.
One volunteer passionately articulates their mission: to bolster environmental awareness, enhance waste recovery efforts, and champion responsible waste management practices.
Their words echo with a powerful resolve to build sustainable, resilient communities, curb waste leakage, and spark circular solutions through unity.
Transforming Mindsets
Nestlé Nigeria works alongside communities and stakeholders to create shared value.
Central to this effort is community sensitisation, where residents learn about the serious public health risks of indiscriminate waste dumping. By educating residents about the serious public health risks of indiscriminate waste dumping, the initiative marks a significant shift in environmental consciousness. The collaboration between local community members and corporate volunteers symbolises a pivotal victory in fostering responsible waste management practices.

In a nation where waste poses a significant environmental threat and pressure mounts to translate sustainability commitments into tangible action, Nestlé’s proactive stance becomes even more significant, representing a deliberate effort to strengthen waste recovery and advance circular economy principles.

For many, Nestlé serves as a guiding light in environmental care, forging a path toward a cleaner, greener, and healthier nation.

Empowering Waste Workers
Recognising the vital role of plastic waste workers, Nestlé Nigeria launched the Safety, Health, and Environment (SHE) Training Programme, equipping 100 workers with essential skills and protective gear.
As trainees express their enthusiasm, the programme reflects a commitment to uplifting those on the front lines of waste management.
Engr. Mayowa Elefin, speaking on behalf of trainees, shares their enthusiasm for the programme and how it aligns with their dedication to safety and sustainability.
For them, it’s an empowering experience and invaluable in boosting productivity and creating healthier workplaces, resonating with Nestlé’s vision of elevating lives and cultivating a brighter future for people and the planet.
Backed  by organisations such as the National Environmental Standards and Regulations Enforcement Agency (NESREA), the Recyclers Association of Nigeria (RAN), and the Food Beverage Recycling Alliance (FBRA), the programme covers responsible recycling, occupational health and safety.
Prof. Innocent Barikor, Director General of NESREA, highlights the often-unrecognised efforts of waste workers in combating plastic pollution, underscoring the significance of such training initiatives in empowering these vital contributors to society.
He lauds Nestlé’s commitment to environmental sustainability and the health of those on the front lines of waste management.
Celebrating Milestones in Sustainability
The numbers are evident: Since 2019, Nestlé Nigeria has recycled over 60,000 metric tons of plastic, showcasing the power of collaboration with various stakeholders.
Its internal initiatives, such as the Employee Plastics Collection Scheme, further reinforce a culture of accountability and proactive waste management, successfully recovering more than 12,000 kilograms of plastic since its inception in 2022.
Nestlé Cares, the company’s employee volunteering platform, supports environmental and social responsibility. By engaging employees in community projects, it helps them contribute to their localities and reinforces Nestlé’s commitment to sustainability.
These efforts were recognised at the SERAS Africa Sustainability Awards 2024, where Nestlé Nigeria was honoured as Best in Circular Economy. The accolade marked a historic achievement: the first company in Nigeria to attain circularity in its production value chain, notably by incorporating 50% recycled PET in its premium water brand, Nestlé Pure Life. Furthermore, the company has achieved an impressive milestone of 100% plastics neutrality, recovering every ton of plastic it introduces into the market for recycling
Mrs Victoria Uwadoka, the Lead of Corporate Communications, Public Affairs, and Sustainability at Nestlé Nigeria, articulates the company’s aim in this direction.
“At Nestlé, our commitment to fighting plastic waste is integral to our vision of a waste-free future,” she declares
“This vision encompasses internal accountability and proactive stakeholder engagement. Through strategic partnerships with the Food and Beverage Recycling Alliance (FBRA) and plastic waste recyclers, we are supporting the advancement of circularity within the plastics value chain.”
Nestlé Nigeria and its coalition partners have woven a narrative of hope and action over the past six years. This initiative, an example of collaboration, unites government bodies, industry leaders, recyclers, and development partners in a concerted effort to foster a circular economy. Through these initiatives, Nestlé Nigeria is not just addressing plastic waste; it is inspiring a movement towards a more sustainable future, one community at a time.
To advance this mission, the company launched a multi-stakeholder coalition this year to mark the 2026 World Environment Day, signalling continued environmental action. The initiative connects policy, infrastructure, community action, and market-based recovery systems to support environmental results.
Through these efforts, Nestlé Nigeria is addressing plastic waste and encouraging a more sustainable future, one community at a time.
Adaptable Approach
The coalition’s design is adaptable: its focus on collaboration, stakeholder engagement, and local context makes it a framework that can be replicated and tailored in other regions facing similar waste management challenges. By offering a model that prioritises systemic solutions and collective impact, this approach supports broader adoption and the development of sustainable waste recovery networks beyond its initial footprint.
Powered by Nestlé Cares volunteers and supported by a coalition of 15 organisations, the initiative uses a multi-stakeholder framework aligned with national environmental priorities.
Key players in this coalition included the Federal Ministry of Environment, the National Environmental Standards and Regulations Enforcement Agency, and industry platforms focused on sustainable practices. Development partners, such as the Swiss Consulate and the Kingdom of the Netherlands, supported the initiative.
The coalition mobilised 424 volunteers across 12 locations, from Lagos to Abuja, Jos, Agbara, Kano, Enugu, Awka, Ota, Abaji, Sagamu, Port Harcourt, and Ibadan, each chosen to reflect local waste challenges.

In each city, local community leaders organised teams, coordinated logistics, and engaged residents throughout the clean-up activities.
By providing training sessions and leadership opportunities, the initiative helped residents lead ongoing waste management efforts after the campaign concluded. Community members were encouraged to share best practices and act as ambassadors for sustainable waste management in their neighbourhoods, building local capacity for lasting change.
Together, they worked to reclaim the environment and recover waste. This effort cleaned public spaces and highlighted the importance of responsible waste management.
Reports from the African Clean-Up Initiative and the Recyclers Association of Nigeria show that 4,507.8 kilograms of solid waste and 48.2 kilograms of recyclables were salvaged.
Mrs Adeola Omotunde, Director of the Pollution Control and Environmental Health Department, Federal Ministry of Environment, underscores that tackling environmental challenges demands unwavering action across all sectors.
Her words capture the essence of collaboration, showing how government, private enterprises, and local communities can unite to foster responsible environmental practices that deliver tangible results.
Mrs Olabimpe Adenaike, Controller. Lagos Field Office, Federal Ministry of Environment, lauds the coalition’s commitment to sustainability and community development.
She highlights the initiative’s alignment with the Ministry’s goals of driving climate action and promoting environmental safety.
Collective Call to Action
As the campaign unfolds, leaders from various sectors emphasise the need for collaboration to tackle environmental challenges. Their collective call resonates with Nigerians, urging a commitment to sustainable living and responsible waste management. The initiative is framed not merely as a project but as a movement, embodying the principles of shared responsibility and circular economy.

Adenaike urges all to embrace proper waste management and sustainable living as they work together toward a cleaner, greener nation.

For Mrs Esther Chibueyin Fagbo, the Country Manager of the National Plastics Action Partnership (NPAP), the initiative was not just a project but a movement—a testament to the power of partnership.

“We are proud to have supported this effort,” she declares, her optimism palpable, as she envisions a future where circular economy solutions flourish, creating both environmental and economic value.

Dr Alex Akhigbe, the visionary Founder of the African Clean-Up Initiative, expands on this sentiment, framing the initiative as more than a simple clean-up.

“It represents a sustainability movement grounded in the principles of collective responsibility, collaboration and the circular economy,” he says.
“The fight against plastic pollution requires deliberate action. Every bottle collected, every conversation initiated contributes to shaping a culture of environmental consciousness.”
To ensure transparency and drive continuous improvement, Nestlé Nigeria uses rigorous progress-tracking methods for all environmental initiatives. Nestlé measures outcomes using key performance indicators such as the amount of waste collected, the number of volunteers engaged, and the expansion of recycling partnerships. The results are documented in regular sustainability reports and shared with stakeholders, providing clear metrics and fostering data-driven accountability throughout each campaign.
Victoria Uwadoka, Lead of Corporate Communications at Nestlé Nigeria marvels at the extraordinary results of this year’s exercise, seeing beyond the sheer amount of waste collected to the vibrant spirit of teamwork that sparked among volunteers, partners, and residents.
She encapsulates the essence of the initiative: true environmental progress arises from shared accountability and active community participation. As volunteers and residents unite, their collective spirit becomes the cornerstone of lasting environmental change. With each small effort, they pave the way for a cleaner, healthier, and more sustainable tomorrow, inspiring a culture of environmental consciousness that transcends generations.
As environmental stewardship continues, many are inspired to adopt innovative waste management practices, embrace recycling, and build lasting sustainable habits. Together, these efforts point toward a cleaner, healthier, more sustainable tomorrow.
