Tinubu deserves respect beyond politics, Defence Minister tells oppositions

The Minister of State for Defence, Bello Mohammed, has stressed that the Presidency remains a symbol of Nigeria’s sovereignty that should be respected irrespective of political differences, warning opposition politicians against actions capable of undermining the country’s democratic institutions.

The Minister in a statement issued on Friday by Ahmad Dan-Wudil, Personal Assistant on Media, said that instead of seeking to tarnish Nigeria’s image abroad and undermine the Presidency, opposition leaders should channel their energy towards supporting government efforts to strengthen national unity.

Mohammed also urged opposition politicians to desist from actions and comments capable of inciting Nigerians against the constitutionally elected government of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

The Minister described as unfortunate the reported decision by former Vice President Atiku Abubakar to engage a foreign lobbying firm to circulate decades-old documents relating to President Tinubu in the United States (US).

He said such actions neither advance Nigeria’s democracy nor address the pressing challenges confronting the nation.

“The Presidency is a national institution and symbol of Nigeria’s sovereignty that deserves respect, regardless of political differences,” the statement read.

“No foreign government or lobbying firm will determine Nigeria’s democratic choices or alter the mandate freely given by Nigerians.

“Our political differences must never come at the expense of our country’s image and collective interest.”

“President Donald Trump recently commended President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s leadership and acknowledged Nigeria’s progress in strengthening security cooperation and combating terrorism.

Such international recognition, the Minister noted, reflects the growing confidence in Nigeria’s efforts under President Tinubu and should encourage all patriotic citizens to work together rather than promote divisive narratives abroad.

“Promoting propaganda and hatred against a government that enjoys the goodwill of the people will not affect its well-being, survival, or progress.

“Rather, it will backfire on those sponsoring such utterances, who will be shamed politically and morally,” he said.

“Those thinking that lies and mischief can bring down President Tinubu’s government are jokers, because the country belongs to the people, and they will willingly renew the mandate in 2027.”

The Minister, therefore, called on opposition politicians to embrace constructive engagement by offering credible alternatives and supporting ongoing efforts to combat insecurity, promote peaceful coexistence, and accelerate national development, instead of pursuing campaigns capable of heating up the polity ahead of the 2027 general elections.

“Nigeria belongs to all of us, and every political actor has a responsibility to protect the country’s unity, stability, and international reputation,” the statement said.
