It is within this context that Umar Ajiya Isa’s political entrance has attracted considerable public attention. Many believe that such Ajiya’s ambition reflects a leader with administrative experience, grassroots connection, and a proven capacity for results.

Before the coming of Governor Ahmed Aliyu, Sokoto State faced some of the most serious public health challenges in Northern Nigeria, particularly in the areas of child malnutrition, maternal mortality, and access to basic healthcare services, largely due to the neglect of the Aminu Tambuwal administration. The failure of that administration to make meaningful investments in critical sectors contributed significantly to the worsening conditions faced by many women and children across the state. These problems were further aggravated by insecurity, widespread poverty, food insecurity, and weak healthcare infrastructure in several communities.

In this investigative report, our correspondent, SHAFA’ATU SULEIMAN, travelled across two states- Yobe and Sokoto to document the trajectories in the running of the country’s Primary Healthcare System. It independently looks at the failing approach and key successes of primary healthcare centres across the two states, and how weak health information systems make infrastructure planning reactive rather than proactive.

Aminu Waziri Tambuwal, Senator for Sokoto South, has declared that his move from the People’s Democratic Party to the All-Democratic Congress (ADC) marks the most promising step for his political journey.
