Governor Ahmad Aliyu of Sokoto State has tasked local government authorities and district heads to implement stringent measures to prevent the overloading of canoes.
Overloading has been recognised as a significant factor contributing to canoe-related accidents in the state.
Recently, more than sixty-five individuals tragically lost their lives in an incident in Gorau, located in the Goronyo local government area.
A high-powered delegation from the state government, led by APC leader Senator Aliyu Wamakko, visited the disaster victims and communicated the governor’s directive.
He directed local government officials and district heads to enforce strict actions to eliminate overloading.
Canoe mishaps have remained a cause for concern. Last year, between 22 August and 19 September, three fatal incidents were recorded in various locations in Sokoto.
