As the 2027 General Elections approach, Alhaji Sambo Bello Danchadi, the Commissioner for Information and Orientation in Sokoto, has emphasised the necessity of maintaining the state’s legacy of harmonious coexistence by ensuring peaceful political engagements
“Sokoto State has a proud tradition of peaceful coexistence, and we must all work together to preserve that heritage,” he stated. “Peaceful political engagement benefits everyone—government, political parties, the media, and, most importantly, the citizens.”
Alhaji Danchadi made this appeal during the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) Sokoto State Council congress, themed ‘Journalism and Political Campaigns: Between Public Interest and Political Influence’.
He urged political actors, regardless of their affiliations, to focus their campaigns on ideas, policies, and issues that genuinely affect the populace, rather than making statements that could incite unnecessary tension or division.
Additionally, Alhaji Danchadi called for campaigns to be conducted with maturity, responsibility, and respect for democratic values.
He commended the leadership of the NUJ for selecting what he described as a timely and thought-provoking theme, noting the discussion as 202 both necessary and relevant, given that the media serves as a crucial pillar of democracy and a trusted bridge between the government and the public.
“Political campaigns are periods of heightened public engagement. During these times, journalists bear a greater responsibility to ensure that citizens receive accurate, balanced, and verified information that enables them to make informed decisions,” he highlighted.
“Editorial independence, fairness, objectivity, and adherence to professional ethics must continue to define journalism, even amid intense political activities.”
He encouraged journalists to remain vigilant against misinformation and disinformation, particularly on digital platforms where false information can spread rapidly.
“The public relies on professional journalists as custodians of credible information, and your commitment to verification and ethical reporting is more crucial now than ever before,” he remarked.
He urged the NUJ to continue investing in professional development, mentoring younger journalists, and upholding the esteemed ethics of the profession. He added that their dedication would significantly contribute to peaceful elections, national unity, and the consolidation of democracy.
The Commissioner stated that the government recognises and respects the indispensable role of the media in promoting peace, accountability, and informed public discourse.
“The administration of His Excellency, Dr. Ahmad Aliyu Sokoto, FCNA, remains committed to constructive engagement with the media while respecting the independence and professionalism of journalists,” he affirmed.
“The policies and programmes of the current administration are guided by the Nine-Point Smart Agenda, which provides a clear roadmap for development across various sectors, including Security, Religious Affairs, Education, Healthcare, Economic Development, Agriculture, Water Supply, Youth Empowerment, and Local Government Autonomy. These priorities continue to shape government interventions aimed at improving the lives of the people of Sokoto State.”
