There are individuals whose careers are defined by professional success, and there are those whose lives are measured by the lives they have transformed. Barr. Rashida Muhammed undoubtedly belongs to the latter category. She is an outstanding legal practitioner, human rights activist, and a passionate advocate for the empowerment and protection of women and children. My path first crossed with hers during the prosecution of a serial child sexual abuse case involving a perpetrator with strong political connections who had repeatedly exploited his influence to commit violence against innocent young girls. At a time when many feared that justice might be compromised, Barr. Rashida demonstrated exceptional courage, commitment, and resilience, ensuring that the case was diligently prosecuted and that the voices of the victims were not silenced.
Beyond litigation, Barr. Rashida has devoted her career to humanitarian service and the promotion of justice for vulnerable populations. Through her law chambers and her role as legal adviser to several civil society organizations, she has consistently provided legal support, guidance, and representation to individuals and organizations seeking justice. Her chambers have remained open to civil society actors and community stakeholders, making it difficult to see her office as merely a private legal practice. Rather, it has become a sanctuary where legal expertise meets compassion and public service.
Barr. Rashida’s leadership within the Nigerian Bar Association has equally distinguished her as a trailblazer. By becoming the first female elected Secretary of the Caliphate Bar, Nigerian Bar Association, Sokoto State Branch, and subsequently its Chairperson, she broke barriers and redefined what inclusive leadership looks like within the legal profession. These achievements were not accidental; they were earned through years of selfless service, stakeholder engagement, professional competence, and an uncommon ability to unite colleagues around a shared vision.
One of the qualities I admire most about Barr. Rashida is her professionalism and emotional intelligence. She possesses the rare ability to disagree respectfully while maintaining civility, honouring both seniority and professional competence. She has cultivated cordial and respectful relationships with colleagues across all levels of the profession, earning admiration and trust through humility, integrity, and exemplary leadership.
Her tenure as Chairperson will be remembered for fostering unity, strengthening professional engagement, and restoring confidence in the activities of the Bar. One memorable demonstration of her leadership was the successful hosting of the 2026 Caliphate Bar Law Week, which attracted distinguished personalities from across the country, including The Emir of Borgu, Distingish Legal Luminary Hassan Liman SAN, the Honourable Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, respected traditional rulers, members of the Bench and Bar, and several other eminent Nigerians. The success of that event reflected not only her exceptional organisational ability but also the respect and credibility she commands within the legal profession.
Beyond her accomplishments, what distinguishes Barr. Rashida most is her character. She embodies the rare ability to disagree without being disagreeable, to uphold professional principles without sacrificing respect, and to engage colleagues both senior and junior with humility, courtesy, and dignity. In an era where differences often breed division, she has consistently demonstrated that civility, mutual respect, and professionalism remain indispensable virtues of the legal profession.
As you prepare to embrace greater responsibilities, it is important to acknowledge that your stewardship at the Nigerian Bar Association, Sokoto State Branch, has left an enduring legacy. You have inspired young lawyers, strengthened unity among members, revitalized professional engagement, and demonstrated that visionary leadership can transform institutions and communities alike.
It would be incomplete to celebrate your achievements without recognizing the unwavering support you received from members of the legal profession and civil society organisations in Sokoto State and beyond. In a society where women often face barriers to leadership, it was truly inspiring to witness distinguished men and women unite behind your vision and leadership. The members of the Nigerian Bar Association, Sokoto State Branch, deserve special commendation for championing merit over prejudice and for contributing to a legacy that challenges patriarchy, stereotypes and advances inclusive leadership.
I also wish to acknowledge the invaluable encouragement and support of Prof. Abdullahi Ibrahim, SAN, your immediate predecessor M. Nuhu, Esq., Hon. Justice M. A. Sambo, and the many distinguished colleagues and friends who stood by you throughout your stewardship. They are too numerous to mention, but history shall remember them well. Their confidence in your leadership reminds us that meaningful progress is achieved when capable individuals are supported regardless of gender.
As you continue your journey of service to the legal profession, national development, and humanity, I pray that Almighty Allah grants you continued wisdom, strength, protection, and greater opportunities to serve. May your legacy of justice, compassion, and transformational leadership continue to inspire generations to come.
