Journalists have been urged to stand firm against political, financial, and personal pressures, and to champion reporting that ensures accountability and transparency.
Yahaya Tanko Baba, PhD, Professor of Political Institutions & Comparative Politics, Department of Political Science, Usmanu Danfodiyo University, Sokoto, made the call while delivering a lecture at the Congress of the Nigeria Union of Journalists, NUJ Sokoto Council.
He painted patriotism, journalism, and national development as three pillars, each supporting the nation’s journey toward progress.
“Patriotism motivates journalists to expose corruption for the good of society,” he said “Journalism strengthens patriotism by highlighting national achievements; Journalism promotes accountability, reducing corruption.”
Baba underscored the power of social development to spark unity, equality, better education, and healthier communities.
“Good governance and strong institutions are essential foundations,” he reiterated
The professor of political Institutions also highlighted the role of patriotic citizens, who stand behind national policies and help build the nation’s future.
“Patriotism promotes hard work, discipline, and social cooperation,” noted Prof Baba
“Patriotism and journalism are crucial in shaping a nation’s developmental trajectory; patriotism inspires citizens to support national growth and unity.”
The don cautioned against what he termed “blind patriotism.’ “Blind patriotism, however, supports government actions uncritically and may harm democracy,” the don added.
“Constructive patriotism promotes critical engagement and demands good governance.”
He said patriotism also involves speaking positively about the nation and promoting its achievements at home and abroad; national pride enhances global image, attracts investments, and strengthens cultural confidence.”
In a remark, the Commissioner of Information and Orientation, Sokoto State, Alhaji Sambo Bello Danchadi, described the lecture’s theme, “Patriotism, Journalism and National Development,” as timely and essential.
“At a period when our nation faces diverse social, economic, and security challenges, the role of the media becomes even more central in shaping public understanding, strengthening unity, and promoting responsible citizenship,” he asserted
“Patriotism in journalism does not mean concealing the truth; it means telling the truth constructively, accurately, and in ways that contribute to peace, development, and public trust.”
He pointed out that the nation’s precarious security situation required that journalists discharge their duties with utmost consideration for the promotion of peace and progress in society.
“Journalists are generally viewed as the custodians of society’s conscience. We must therefore do all we can to justify the confidence that society has reposed in us.”
The commissioner encouraged the NUJ and all media professionals to champion patriotism by fighting misinformation, upholding ethics, and spotlighting progress that builds public trust in leadership.
Comrade Usman Mohammed Binji, Chairman of the NUJ Sokoto State Council, shared that the topic was chosen to spotlight the vital role journalists play in shaping opinions, uniting the nation, and fuelling Nigeria’s growth.
“At a time when our nation faces security challenges, political tension, and rising public expectations, the need for patriotic and ethical journalism has never been greater,” he remarked.
He reaffirmed the NUJ Sokoto State Council’s dedication to professionalism, ongoing training, and working hand in hand with security agencies, government, and community leaders to advance peace and progress.
