UNICEF Executive Director Catherine Russell says Nigeria can be a positive example in developing new investment models for services and economic growth that benefit all children. She expressed UNICEF’s readiness to support the country in this effort.
Russell, who made these remarks after completing her mission to Nigeria, acknowledged the dedication of government counterparts at both the federal and state levels and reiterated UNICEF’s commitment to collaborating with all partners, including the private sector, to expand opportunities for every child.
“Everywhere I went in Nigeria, I saw the strength, ambition and potential of children and young people, despite ongoing challenges,” UNICEF Executive Director Catherine Russell said.
“There is no denying that many children face challenges, but I am encouraged by the Government-led efforts to provide critical services for children.”
She shared these observations during her visit to Sokoto State in Northwest Nigeria: “In Sokoto, I met mothers at a UNICEF-supported health care centre where children were being treated for malnutrition, helping them survive. I also met girls and boys who are getting a second chance in education through digital learning.”
The UNICEF ED noted progress in areas such as birth registration, social protection, and school enrolment, stating that these gains demonstrate what is possible when children are prioritised. However, she emphasised that more must be done to ensure every child benefits.
She highlighted how the early years of a child’s life shape their future, adding that proper nutrition, healthcare, early learning, and protection help children reach their full potential, building the foundation for stronger communities and a prosperous economy.
Russell underscored the need for sustained investment to protect recent gains amid increasing global and regional economic pressures, and to expand opportunities for all children.
