As Nigerians commemorate Children’s Day 2025, Governments at all levels, particularly in Sokoto State and other parts of the northern region, have been urged to intensify efforts towards improving the Almajiri system of education.
The Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) Sokoto State Council made the call in a statement signed by its Chair, Usman Mohammed Binji, and Secretary, Muhammad Nasir Bello.
“We recognize the cultural and historical relevance of the Almajiri model, but there is an urgent need for reforms that integrate both Qur’anic and basic formal education while also ensuring the welfare, safety, and dignity of the children enrolled in such systems,” the statement added.
“A reformed and well-funded Almajiri education system will help in curbing street begging, reducing illiteracy, and equipping our children with both religious and practical knowledge that will make them productive members of society.”
It describes the day as a moment for sober reflection on the challenges facing children and the collective responsibility in securing their future.
“As we mark this important day, the NUJ Sokoto State Council emphasizes the critical role of parents, guardians, and caregivers in shaping the lives of children,” it added.
“Beyond material provision, we urge families to invest more in the moral, spiritual, and emotional development of their children. The home remains the first institution where values such as discipline, honesty, respect, and responsibility must be instilled.”
The council also appeals to policymakers, traditional institutions, religious leaders, and development partners to work collaboratively in designing and implementing child-friendly programs and initiatives that enhance education, healthcare, nutrition, and protection for all children.
The NUJ reaffirmed its commitment to using its platforms to highlight child welfare issues, advocate for responsive governance, and promote a society where every child—regardless of their background —can dream, grow, and thrive.
“As we celebrate this year’s Children’s Day, let us recommit to our duty of care, love, and guidance to every child around us,” it pointed out.
“Our future as a people depends on the strength and character of the next generation.”
