In response to perennial canoe mishaps resulting in fatalities in Sokoto, the state government has approved N1.1 billion for acquiring motorised boats and life jackets.
The committee that looked into the concern found that only Dange-Shuni local government, out of the 23 local government districts in the state, was not affected.
Approval for the procurement of motorised boats and life jackets was based on the committee’s report, according to Alhaji Ibrahim Dade Adare, the Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs.
At the conclusion of Wednesday’s state executive council meeting, which Governor Ahmed Aliyu presided over, Adare briefed journalists on this.
The Commissioner added, “In view of this, the state government deemed it necessary to procure motorized boats and life jackets and distribute them to the 22 local government areas that experienced flooding this year.”
Demonstrating a commitment to poverty alleviation, the state administration has allocated N565.2 million to purchase 12,376 bags of 25 kg of rice for distribution to the impoverished and vulnerable populations in the state.
The state executive council meeting also approved a sum of N149.8 million for completing the terminal block at the Alu garage in Sokoto city.
