The Sokoto State Government has unveiled an ambitious plan to breathe new life into its historical sites, aiming to boost tourism and unlock fresh streams of revenue.
“The revival and improvement of these historical sites will preserve the rich history of the Caliphate and its founders, while providing a conducive environment for tourists, scholars, and researchers,” explained Governor Ahmad Aliyu.
“We will use all available means to ensure these sites are protected and preserved.”
He disclosed this during the commissioning of the remodelled Zawiyatu Sheikh Aliyu Bunza.
The governor also revealed plans to seek a closer partnership with the Federal Government to elevate and transform the state’s treasured historical monuments.
He called on all stakeholders responsible for historical sites to begin preparations and craft a detailed roadmap for their restoration and growth.
Gov. Aliyu shared that the decision was inspired by Sokoto’s status as the Seat of the Caliphate, a city brimming with ancient treasures and monuments, some predating the jihad era, all deserving careful preservation for future generations.
Today, Sokoto proudly showcases a wealth of historical treasures, from Hubbaren Shehu and Hubbaren Muhammadu Fodiyo in Degel to Tabkin Kwato, Alkalawa, Surame, among others.
